Hooray! Pekarek’s Produce has water again! As of Thursday afternoon, we have a brand new well that seems to be working perfectly. Thank goodness we have good neighbors that loaned us a 1400 gallon tank to limp along some of our plants.
This week we transplanted thousands of broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprout and kohlrabi plants (after we had a new well, of course). Luckily, we did not drop these plants by hand – we used the transplanter. In the best situation, we will have 4 people riding on the back transplanting into two rows, Ryan drives the tractor and one person walks behind to fix any missed plantings or other problems. Driving straight is extremely difficult during this process as the tractor is moving very slowly.
This week’s CSA bag includes a bottle of honey from AbBee’s Honey. Abby Lyons, age 13, began beekeeping as a 4-H project with her grandpa in 2008. She says “Along with my family, Galen and Lisa Lyons, Andy, Alex, Ben and Emily I have a total of 12 hives. The hives located on Pekarek’s Produce help the native insects pollinate the vegetables. The going rate for renting beehives to pollinate a farm is about $55 a month per hive. Ryan and I have an ongoing agreement with no cash being exchanged, but veggies for honey bee pollination instead. Honey from our hives is known for it’s light color and taste… My family lives just a half mile from Ryan and Katie, which makes our partnership very natural. I love beekeeping and hope to be an Entomologist when I grow up.”
AbBee’s Honey sells honey, honey roasted nuts, beeswax candles and chapsticks at the Seward farmer’s market, some local craft fairs and from home.
