Can you believe it is the half way mark of the CSA? The craziness of the summer will soon become the business of fall, as we brace for most of our crew to go back to school.
This is Laura and this picture summarizes our season thus far. It has been full of ups and downs. Storms and hail, then no water; cucumbers that are producing amazing and peppers that give us one pepper for every ten plants. Blossom end rot has been difficult on both the peppers and tomatoes this year. Because of the heat, the plants cannot move enough calcium to the end of the fruit and the ends of the fruit rot. But as exhausting as this work is, we are excited for small triumphs like finding 1 good tomato in the midst of lesser tomatoes.
Each year, Ryan and I have a talk about muskmelon versus cantaloupe. I have always called them a cantaloupe, but the North American cantaloupe, common in the United States, Mexico, and in some parts of Canada, is actually a muskmelon. But, whatever you call it, muskmelons love the heat, as they are descended from a tropical plant. They love a long hot season to grow, which is why you sometimes see them growing in high tunnels and hoop houses. They are a good source of vitamin A, C, B6, B3, fiber, potassium and folate, and has anti-inflammatory properties.
