2016 CSA – Week 1

YAY!  The CSA is starting!! I’m so excited.

Welcome to the 2016 Pekarek’s Produce CSA!  We are excited to have several new and returning members.  We appreciate your support and look forward to sharing our yummy, fresh vegetables with you through the coming year – THANK YOU.

The 2016 CSA boxes are being picked up on Wednesdays from 4-7pm in Seward at Winter Wonderland, 4-7 pm in Lincoln at Schillingbridge Tap and Cork, 4 – 7 pm at the Nebraska Heart Institute and 1 pm – evening on the farm.  If for some reason you are unable to pick up your weekly produce share during a given week of the season, you are welcome to have a friend pick it up and enjoy.  Otherwise, let us know and we will donate that week’s produce.

Each week you will go to your CSA location (farm, Seward, or Lincoln) and find the Pekarek’s Produce wax box labeled with your name.  We have multiple people with the same last name, so you may have to look for your first initial as well.  The following Wednesday, you will bring back (RETURN) your empty box and leave it at the site in an empty black crate.  You will then be able to pick up a new box, with your name on it, full of vegetables.  This means you will have 2 boxes with your name that will be in circulation.

For those of you who are new to the CSA, Pekarek’s Produce is run by my husband Ryan, and me, Katie.  Ryan got a Master’s degree from North Carolina State University in Vegetable Production and began raising vegetables in 2004, while in college.  In 2009, we began vegetable farming full time.  All of the produce is grown on our family land just 14 miles north of Seward.  Pekarek’s Produce now raises over 50 varieties of crops on approximately 14 acres.  With the help of a small local crew, we tackle the many aspects of farming: seeding, transplanting, watering, hoeing, weeding, harvesting and much more.   We have three kids (Jacob, Margret, and Michael), who as they get older, help out a little more each year.

Each week, we will have a short newsletter describing some aspect of the farm, from hilling potatoes to building cold frames and more.  Right now, the newsletter will likely focus on mud and some weather that has put us a little behind in the field.  As Ryan is always covered in dirt or mud, your newsletters will come from me, but if you’ve ever met Ryan, you can be sure he won’t be silent.  We look forward to a great season!

We have seen our fair share of hail, mud, and ponds where they shouldn’t be this spring.  As a result, many field crops are behind, but we look to make up ground in the next two weeks.

New this year, starting in week two, we will have a contributor who will be sharing recipes, pictures, and perhaps even a video or two on how to use the produce you receive in your weekly box. Be sure to check out our blog at pekareksproduce.wordpress.com for the weekly newsletter, pictures, our recipes and more.

Your Farmers,

Ryan, Katie, and Crew
